Despite the current economic climate, a Newcastle casino is looking to recruit a substancial number of new applicants to its flagship croupier training course, which offers a guaranteed job to all students who make the grade.
Employing almost 200 people, Aspers at The Gate is seeking to expand its team following the successful introduction of 24-hour opening. The popular venue has run its own training course since opening its doors in 2005, attracting many people in search of an alternative to the standard nine to five job.
"The role of a croupier is certainly different as it involves a lot of shift work over seven days a week," said Alan Barnes, Head of Gaming at Aspers. "The advantages are flexible hours, an exciting working environment and the opportunity to climb the career ladder within the casino. Many of our current management team started out on the croupier training programme."
A croupier, sometimes known as a dealer, can expect to work across all of the different games offered at Aspers, from Poker to Blackjack and Roulette. The six week course covers all aspects of the role from dealing cards to customer service, and successful participants can expect an enjoyable and varied job role, working on several different games in the course of a shift.
"It's about a lot more than simply learning to shuffle," added Alan. "We teach our students to handle cards and chips in a professional manner, while engaging with customers and keeping control of the table, which includes keeping an eye out for any suspect activity.
"Most people in senior roles in the gaming industry started out on a course like this one and there are excellent opportunities for advancement. The skills you acquire are in demand around the world and, because it's such a specialised profession, good croupiers are always in demand."
The next training course is expected to begin in October or November and no previous experience is required. Candidates should show an enthusiasm for the gaming sector, a willingness to learn and be flexible in the hours they're able to work. If you're interested or would like to find out more, call Aspers at The Gate on (0191) 255 0400 or collect an application form from reception.
